A studio or AI coding tools?
Should you build it yourself with AI coding tools, or with a studio? Start with the tools if you can: they make a working prototype cheap and fast, and a prototype is the best way to find out what you actually mean. What they don't supply is the judgement about what's worth building, and the work between a prototype and a product real users can rely on. Building is cheap. Seeing isn't.
Written by us, so read it knowing that. We've tried to say plainly when the other option is the better choice.
Where they differ.
| What differs | AI coding tools | A studio like us |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to try an idea | Low | Higher, and it comes with a decision about whether to build at all |
| Speed to a prototype | Fast | Fast, once the scope is decided |
| Deciding what to build | Up to you | Decided with you, with evidence, before the build |
| Real data and edge cases | Up to you to test | Built and tested on real data |
| Proof it works | Usually a demo | An evaluation set, tests, and a staged release |
| Security and scale | Up to you | Part of the build, with the constraints written down first |
| Best at | Exploring, prototyping, testing demand | Deciding, then taking it to production |
When each is the better choice.
Choose ai coding tools when
- You want to explore an idea or test demand cheaply.
- You're technical enough to judge what the tool produces.
- The stakes of a failure are low: a prototype, an internal tool, a demo.
Choose a studio when
- The prototype works, and now it has to work for real users, on real data.
- You're not sure what to build, or what to leave out.
- Failures would cost you customers, money or trust.
Questions to ask either.
- What breaks when this meets real users and real data?
- How will we know it works before everyone sees it?
- Which parts need a model at all?
We already built a prototype with an AI coding tool. Is it wasted?
No. It's the best specification you'll ever have: it shows what you meant. The next step is to decide, against the data and the architecture, whether to extend it or rebuild the parts that won't hold.
Will AI coding tools replace studios?
They replace a lot of typing. They don't replace deciding what's worth building, or proving that it works. Those become more valuable as building gets cheaper.
