Design partner
A design partner is an early customer who works closely with a team while a product is being shaped, trying early versions and giving feedback in return for influence and often early access. Design partners are valuable for learning and unreliable as proof of demand.
What it means
Design partners help a team build the right thing: they bring real problems, real data and honest reactions to early versions. What they can't do is prove that the market wants the product, because they've been chosen, courted and involved.
Friendly design partners are one of the most common false signals of product-market fit. The test is whether people who weren't involved behave the same way.
How we use it
Our method We read design partners as learning, not proof. Fit is judged on behaviour from users who weren't hand-picked, which is why a soft launch sits between beta and live in every release.
