A studio or freelancers?
Should you build with a studio or with freelancers? Freelancers are excellent for defined pieces of work and specialist skills, and often the most flexible option. The gap is ownership of the whole: when strategy, design and engineering are split across people, someone still has to decide how they fit, and that someone is usually you.
Written by us, so read it knowing that. We've tried to say plainly when the other option is the better choice.
Where they differ.
| What differs | Freelancers | A studio like us |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the whole product | You do, and you coordinate | The team does, with you deciding at each gate |
| Best at | Defined tasks and specialist skills | Decisions that cross strategy, design and engineering |
| Flexibility | High: add or drop people as needed | Inside a fixed scope and a fixed end date |
| Consistency | Depends on how well you brief each person | One team, one method, from decision to launch |
| Proof it works | Depends on each person: ask | An evaluation set, tests and a staged release |
| Continuity | Individuals come and go | A named team for the length of the engagement |
When each is the better choice.
Choose freelancers when
- The work is well defined, and you can brief it precisely.
- You need a specialist skill for a short time.
- You're happy to own the coordination yourself.
Choose a studio when
- Nobody on your side has time to coordinate strategy, design and engineering.
- The hardest part is deciding what to build, not building it.
- You need one team accountable for the whole product.
Questions to ask either.
- Who decides how the pieces fit together?
- Who is accountable if the parts don't work together?
- How will the work be handed over if someone leaves?
Can we mix a studio and freelancers?
Yes. A studio can decide the scope and the product, and specialists can take on defined pieces within it. What matters is that one party owns how the pieces fit.
Are freelancers cheaper?
Often per hour. The hidden cost is coordination: someone has to brief, connect and check the work of each person. If that someone is you, count your time.
